Discover Local Artists: Horan and Hansen

September 19, 2014

Two local artists, with striking but different approaches to viewing the environment, will exhibit their works on  October 18 through November 10 at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach. Inger E. Hansen, a painter, and Steve Horan, a photographer, explore the people, environments and histories of two very different national parks in this joint exhibition, "Everglades and Yellowstone: People and Place."

Horan, of  Lake Worth,  has been visiting Yellowstone National Park to work on an ambitious photography project for five years. He describes his series, “People of Yellowstone” as environmental portraiture, and he aimed to capture the spirit of the people who live and work in Yellowstone and its surrounding ecosystem. He collaborates with his subjects to photograph them in a setting that immediately tells the story of their connection to Yellowstone's wilderness.

"Crimes Against Nature"

Hansen, of Norway and West Palm Beach, is inspired by the Everglades and the  history of the Seminoles. "Most of the nature paintings are done on the spot, in Grassy Waters and Riverbend Park,” she says.  In this body of work, she explores how the culture of the  Seminole people influences their everyday lives. “Together with poems and images, the exhibition will function as a story in a creative play between brushstrokes and the written word.”

"The Strangling Fig Tree"

The exhibition is free and open to the public, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. An opening reception on Friday, Oct. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m., will kick off the exhibit. The artists will also participate in a special presentation, an art salon, on Oct. 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. where they will discuss their work. Admission to the salon is $10. The Armory is located at 1700 Parker Avenue, West Palm Beach. For information, visit www.armoryart.org or call 561-832-1776, extension 33.
